SHORT STORIES

London Was Calling

Harper Hammersmith (yes that is his real name) has come to the English capital, hoping to find inspiration for the next in a series of books he is writing. He immediately loves the city and feels quite safe traipsing all around, exploring at his leisure. Becoming the cause of an internet story gone viral, regarding the safety of the Royal Family, had not been on his list of things to do.

In one of those quaint British pubs we can all imagine, Harper meets Hugh, a man who is dashingly handsome. Hugh wears a fine suit of clothes and projects a steady composure few foreigners will ever manage to mimic. Although the two men are the products of two quite different life stories, the Brit appears as enamored of Harper, as Harper is of Hugh. Both men sense something going on that is set quite something apart from the ordinary.

Is it true that love finds you? Or is the feeling clawing at your guts, and the thumping of excitement lingering in your chest, only a rather devious bout of lust? Or perhaps it is just a one night romp, a mere amusement and Harper is overanalyzing what will never be more than a simple friendship.

Or is it the case that the observation of class stratification in a country where people can be sorted by their skills of elocution, ruins one’s hopes for a happy tomorrow?  Or maybe that’s all bunk? And does it make a difference whether it is love or lust?

So many questions arising from a casual meeting in a pub. Harper may stumble onto the truth of the answers and if not, well, he is a writer after all.

Love in the Time of the Brothers’ War

In a world, not very different from our own, Havrad Brighton, the Viscount of Malhorn has risen to the rank of General, within the Military of the East. He has lived his life so as to please his father and accept his rightful place in society. He is the heir to a noble position, demanding determination, dignity and dedication to the King, family and land. Yet, Havrad is a man who cannot be sated by the traditional notion of love.

Havrad has known romantic love as something unattainable, without ever experiencing the physicality of the union with his heartmate. Now, with the war raging, between the lands of the east and west, perhaps it is too late to hope he will ever again find Caleb. It is a desperate wish, for Havrad’s pride in his own accomplishments would be shattered if the extent of his personal sacrifice became known. This is not a place, thought compatible, for two men to openly love one another.

The Price of Pride

Every school has one kid who just does not fit in. It has nothing to do with appearance, or odor, or wealth, and nothing else, for that matter, to do with that which might be considered obvious. There is just that intangible something which serves to set that one kid apart from his peers. Some call it awkwardness. Most kids outgrow the awkward stage, yet there are always a few who carry it forward and let it fuse with their adult personality. Some are even better off for having whatever “it” is.

Paul Carson had been an awkward teenager. He wasn’t a jock. He often presented as shy and never seemed to fall into friendships with one of the many groups which sprung up in every school. He didn’t join the band, or science club and never considered trying out for the debate team. He was the forgettable kid. The suspicion that Paul Carson might be gay, meant he was also the kid, the others considered avoidable. Unless, of course, there was fun to be had for those others. Paul’s life changed dramatically that Friday afternoon when he became the focus of the joke and the reason for the laughter.

Despite the emotional upheaval, Paul did manage to overcome the worst of the fallout from that Friday and made a decent life for himself.  He hated returning home, but this particular trip was unavoidable. He would arrange matters, so he would never have to return here again. He didn’t want any reminders of his formative years. And as though fate had his number, the first person he recognized from those hated high school years was Ken Redway. Yes, that Ken Redway. Ken Redway, all-star football player; the man who made sure Paul was the butt of the one joke that spiked Paul’s anxiety and sent him into a tailspin. And yet, despite the fact he should hate Ken Redway, the football player managed to be the object of most of Paul’s fantasies.

When the two men are brought together under difficult circumstances, Ken will have to decide if he really wants to explore the feelings he has hidden away these many years and Paul must decide if there is such a thing as true forgiveness. Each man will have to determine if he is to protect himself at all cost, or let his pride take a ride on the wheel of chance. Both will have to learn the price of pride.

Bio

A few words from the author

I realized at a young age that writing was going to be a lifelong passion of mine.  The problem is it has taken me quite some time to get with it. Incorporating different elements into every piece I work on, I like to experiment with various styles and techniques. Considered bold and innovative, I’m never afraid to tackle any project or find new, creative ways to come up with something fresh and original. Feel free to contact me directly if you would like to learn more about me and my work.

On another  note, I do not like to publish details of my personal life. I would rather have the work speak for itself.  If you are anything like me, your interests and tastes vary from year to year. I do not wish to create a description that would prejudice the interaction between the written word and the reader's own imagination. I simply ask that you enjoy the work and write me with comments, positive or negative or perhaps a combination of the two.
